Reticulation Water Pipe Renewals

Reticulation Water Pipe Renewals

NetWorks Alliance commonly uses two pipe laying methods for reticulation water pipes:

  • Open trenching – digging a trench either around or alongside the existing water pipe and replacing it with a new pipe.
  • Pipecracking – using specialised equipment to pull a new pipe through the existing pipe, cracking and expanding the old pipe as the new pipe is pulled through. This method reduces the need to dig up roads.

As pipecracking requires the water being turned off for an extended period of time, we connect residents to a temporary water supply, which is a small above ground plastic pipe. This is removed after the new pipe is connected to the existing water system.

Generally a typical water pipe renewal will take from six to twelve weeks from start to finish. This includes time for the pipe to be tested and cleaned. When the pipe is being tested and cleaned there is generally no work happening in the street. In most renewal situations we will not be working near your property for the full length of work, and we often work on in multiple locations across a suburb.
